A Little History

The tradition of the Highland Games goes back centuries to Northern Scotland.  The games allowed Clan Warriors to test their physical prowess. The first highland games took place in Canada in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, in 1863. Today, athletes around the world take part in this time-honoured tradition, which can be best described as Scotland’s Strongman Competition.

After a hiatus in the late 1970s the Highland Games returned to Sudbury in 2008 during Greater Sudbury's 125 Anniversary Celebrations and quickly captured the community’s imagination. As the festival has progressed it has become Greater Sudbury’s Heritage Festival encompassing the rich cross-cultural heritage roots of the Anishnabek, French Canadian, Irish, Scottish, and Celtic Nations who helped define a modern-day Greater Sudbury.

With so much to offer, we have simply called the event “Friends, Food, Fun & Folklore.” At the festival you will experience traditional food and retail vendors, pipe bands, dancers, storytellers, interactive children’s activities, test of brute strength and a couple pints in our festival pub catered by Sixth Avenue Golf & Country Club. New this year we have added after hours festival pubs at Peddler’s Pub in Downtown Sudbury.
